Hey guys,
This post will be about an interesting video and what we can learn from it. Lessons from vids (tentative name) will be posted by Jerald and someone else (I haven't found the other yet) every Wednesday/Thursday. If you are interested in this "job" please leave a comment BELOW. If you would like to recommend a video to be posted next week, leave a comment below too!
Without further ado here's the video.
Yea it's a Thai insurance commercial. But let's ignore that fact first and see what we can learn from it.
Well this post is obviously about honouring our parents, so let's see what the Bible has to say.
Proverbs 1:8 Hear, my son, your father's instruction, and forsake not your mother's teaching
(The same thing is repeated in Proverbs 6:20) The Bible tells us not to forget what our parents have taught us. The reason being - "
Proverbs 4:1 Hear, O sons, a father's instruction, and be attentive, that you may gain insight." Our parents have
insight, wisdom that we don't. Wisdom that come from the experience in the life they have. Learning to listen attentively to what our parents say instead of "ORH" or "YEA LA YEA LA" can help us learn about things that we would other wise learn the hard way.
In the video, the girls father works as a a owner of a small stall. That pretty much tells us about his education and income. He advices his child to study hard. Feeling that she was weighed down by her father, the girl was not fond of listening to him. The results of that is clearly shown in the video. In Proverbs 10:1, "A wise son makes a glad father, but a foolish son is a sorrow to his mother." When we do not heed the wisdom of our parents, we are not the only one that suffers. In the video, you can see the father's frustration and sadness when his child committed truancy. Seeing you own child straying from the path of righteousness is a depressing thing. I think YLLSs can vouch for that. Remember that our parents want the best for us.
Ephesians 6:4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
This verse is targeted to parents. Why? Because parents, like ourselves, ARE NOT PERFECT! Just as sometimes we know (yea I used 'know' not 'feel') that our parents do not understand us, sometimes it is us who don't understand our parents. Just as sometimes we find it hard express our thoughts in a way they can understand, sometimes they can't find a way to express properly to us. Just like the father in this video; He cannot express himself properly as he was born deaf/mute. Our parents might also have a past experience that hinders them from expressing their thoughts to you. Stop thinking that you understand perfectly what your parents feel. CAUSE YOU DON'T. Try to see things from their perspective.
IF YOU ARE TOO LAZY TO READ THE WHOLE THING, READ THIS! (and stop being so lazy)
In short:
- Listen to your parents, they have more wisdom than you do.
- When you do bad stuff, it hurts more for your parents
- Your parents aren't perfect, try to understand that and understand them.
One of the Ten Commandments is
Exodus 20:12 Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.
So I guess you should know what to do. :)
