Some of you you may have already seen this video on facebook, but I think its message is worthy of a full length post here (actually it might not be that long). When we sing those songs on Sunday do we actually mean it? Or do we have these thoughts during worship? Do we sing because we like the song? Or because we really want to exalt God? What should be the proper attitude for worship?
God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth, not by words, or songs or anything else. Being truthful in worship is important.
Mark 7:6-7 This people honours me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; in vain do they worship me.
Those that sing during worship, "goes through the motion", "fake the emotion", are worshipping in vain. If you were the boss of a company, and your employees praise you, you feel good. But if you find out if deep inside they didn't mean a word they said, would you still feel good? It's the same with God; just that He can see through your heart. Only a truthful worship can be pleasing to God.
So worship should be truthful. But what does it mean to worship in spirit?
Romans 12:1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.
Presenting our bodies as living sacrifice - in other words working for God, keeping to the commandments of God, are all spiritual acts of worship. Worship isn't confined to Sundays only. Worship is a daily thing. In fact worship is all the time. 1 Corinthians 10:31 So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. We should not be the "sing of you love on Sundays" and "this feeling is gone by Monday" person. But glorify the Lord in all that you do.
The mood for worship should be set by you yourself, by your heart, and not by the music. This might sounds like an excuse for a bad worship leader *ahem*, but it's nonetheless true.
