Hello!
A New Song is a new weekly post we'll be starting, where we will share a new Christian song every Friday. Or even a non-Christian song that can give us some lessons in our daily lives.
Music has surely touched every one of us at some point in our lives, where the lyrics spoke to us and we felt what the singer was singing deep to the bottom of our hearts. I remember when I was in Sec 2, feeling angsty and emo-kiddo, when
Welcome to My Life by Simple Plan came on the radio, and I just related to every line of the song and started crying. I'm sure you've had that moment too, whether Christian song or not!
So since we agree that music can speak to people deeper than words can, the objective of these posts is the hope that the songs will be a refreshing lesson for you at the end of the week, and a source of encouragement for the hope we have in Christ.
Well 'nuff said. To kick it all off, I'd like to share
God is Able by
Hillsong, the title track of their new album. As the school holidays draw to a close, I hope those who are struggling will find strength in this song; For those whose lives are going smoothly, that you will praise God for being
able.
One of the Sunday School songs I used to sing when I was younger goes like this:
He's able! He's able!
I know He's able
I know my Lord is able / to carry me through
I never quite understood it when I was singing it. I mean, I was like 5 years old, and is "able" the name of someone, or is it a verb to describe God, just like strong, powerful, mighty? And through what does God need to carry me through? Maybe it's cos I'm a kid so if I get tired of walking, God will carry me. Come to think of it, all my questions were valid in one way or another.
The first line of
God is Able goes like this:
God is able / He will never fail / He is almighty God; and it describes this attribute of God. "Able" is, indeed, a verb that tells us that God is all-powerful and will never fail, simply because He is God. He has everything in His hands so He can do anything He wants; He is
able.
Like a child who gets tired after walking a long distance, we often feel
so very tired running the marathon called life. But like the child I was when I was singing "He's Able!", we know that the Lord will carry us through these moments, that He will never fail nor forsake us. He is also our Jehovah Jireh, which in Hebrew means "The Lord will provide". And He provides for us for He is
greater than all we seek / greater than all we ask. So when the going gets tough, we can find comfort in knowing that God will provide in the best way for us, that He's
able to carry us through, because He is indefinitely greater than whatever problems we might face. All we have to do is to trust Him and His "able-ness", and let Him carry us through.
To close it off, read again the lyrics of the 2nd verse of
God is Able:
God is with us
God is on our side
He will make a way
Far above all we know
Far above all we hope
He has done great things
Do you see the significance of it all? The God who sustains the Earth, who keeps it rotating around the Sun, who keeps our hearts pumping and our lungs expanding, is the same God who is on our side, who will make a way for us when we get lost in the problems of life. Play the Youtube video again, and this time, sing along with it and praise our awesome God for being
able.
In His name / we overcome / for the Lord / our God is able!
