A New Song: Shadowfeet by Brooke Fraser

Friday, September 16, 2011

If you're finding the singer/voice familiar, that's because Brooke Fraser is the one who wrote Hosanna (Matthew & Shermin's fave song) and Desert Song for Hillsong! But Shadowfeet comes from her second album as a folk-pop singer (and not a Christian singer), so if you realise, the song doesn't directly mention God or Jesus or anything like that. But it's quite obvious that the "You" refers to God.

Everyone has a period (or periods) of time in life where we feel tired. Weary. Distracted. Burdened. Walking, stumbling on these shadowfeet / towards... a land [we've] never seen. Sometimes it's our studies, other times it's our other commitments: Church, CCA, friends, family, tuition, piano lessons... The list goes on. We are so bombarded by life itself that we feel lost; walking, but not seeing where our feet's leading us to. Like shadows.

But what's a shadow? According to Wikipedia:
A shadow is an area where direct light from a light source cannot reach due to obstruction by an object.
Apply that to our lives. Shadows are all the darkest, lowest points in our lives where we feel tired, weary, burdened. The light source is obvious - God/Jesus. And the objects - those are all the distractions and myriad commitments in our lives. Now take these meanings and reapply the definition of a shadow again:
The darkest, lowest points in our lives are areas where direct light from God cannot reach due to obstruction by our distractions.
Have you ever felt like that? That all those burdens and distractions are like a wall between you and God, where you feel like you're in a shadow. But guess what? My re-definition of a shadow in terms of life is actually wrong. Hahaha. It says God cannot reach us. The thing is, He doesn't need to!

Pretend God is the Sun and we are the Earth. As the Earth rotates, some places are brightened by the Sun, others are dark because they're not facing the Sun. But being in nighttime doesn't change the fact that the Sun is still there. In life, sometimes we feel on fire for God, other times we feel like we're dragging shadowfeet through life. But it doesn't change the fact that God is still there, has always been there, and will always be there. Just because we're in shadow doesn't mean He will be any less there. He doesn't have to go around the "obstruction by our distractions" to reach us because He is already sitting next to us. And always has been.
When the world has fallen out from under me
I'll be found in You, still standing
When the sky rolls up and the mountains fall on their knees
When time and space are through
I'll be found in You
Like the Sun, God is always there whether or not it's nighttime in our lives. BUT, unlike the Sun and all earthly things, God is eternal and will not disappear when the world ends.
When the world has fallen out from under me
I'll be found in You, still standing
Every fear and accusation under my feet
When time and space are through
I'll be found in You
Unlike shadows which will change and shift, God does not change. He is faithful and always will be. Psalm 73:26 says, "My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever."

The question now is: will you say to Him, "When time and space are through, I'll be found in You"?
