SHAPE: Teamwork Multiplies Talent

Tuesday, September 6, 2011

Hey Guys,

Sorry that the post was not on time.

This week we learnt about teamwork, and how it is important to having a healthy Christian life.
The verse used for this week is Mark 2:1-12. It talks about these four guys climbing up a building, tearing the roof apart and dropping this paralytic down to Jesus. Go read it first.
ESV: Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up! Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone? And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him—a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
No one can survive alone. Physically yes maybe. But no one, repeat: NO ONE, can survive spiritually alone. Everyone has weaknesses; sometimes we fall. Having another trusted person to catch you fall, or help you stand up after falling is essential. Having three people will help ensure that one person won't cause the fall of another. Having more people, awesome. Take the example of the four burly dudes that were such great friends to the paralytic (ok the Bible didn't say that they were burly). If that paralytic had no friends, he could been bound to the bed for the rest of his miserable life. Now look at four dudes. If there were any less than four people, they may still be able to carry their friend, but they wouldn't be able to lower him in a stable and safe manner. That said, please do not try it at home.
ESV: Proverbs 27:17 Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.
Apart from catching each other when they fall, teamwork sharpens our skills. Whether through constructive criticism, advice, encouragement, rebuking etc. Friends help us to improve faster and better than we could ever improve alone. Sometimes we can't see some of our weaknesses. That's where an extra pair of eyes could come in handy.
ESV: Romans 12:4-5 For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.
Everyone has different talents. A liver alone cannot support life; A heart alone cannot support life; A brain alone cannot support life. Only when all the parts are together can they support a life. The same goes for the body of the church. Only when many people with different talents come together and work together can they support the church. And don't think that you are not needed even if there is someone with similar talents to you. Some things you need more than one. Ten fingers; two hands; two eyes. Like the four dudes: they all did the same thing, lower the paralytic. But without any one of them, the paralytic may not be able to reach Jesus safely. Everyone has a part. Don't belittle yourself.
ESV: Ephesians 4:16 ... from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.
When we are together, not only are we able to survive together, we can grow together. A living body grows in size, strength etc. The same for our spiritual life. When we have a healthy body of many parts, we are able to grow properly.

So don't try to do things alone, be a part of a team!
