Lessons from Vids: What's The Point?

Wednesday, October 5, 2011

Hey Guys,

This week's video

Yeah, it's a commercial made by Petronas. But that's besides point.
Luke 9:25 For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself?
In the video, all the women in the video had children with high achievements. One's a lawyer, another's a successful businessman, a specialist in cardiology, owner of a accountant firm, a surgeon. The profession of the son at the end is unknown to the viewer. Maybe it's to prevent offending or favouring any profession. But it has an important message to us. What is the point of scoring all A's, getting good grades, good jobs, lots of money, if we lose our values and morals in the end? Although the video quality is bad, it can still be seen that the other old ladies were envious of the one with a filial son. Although they could brag to each other about how successful their children are, it does not give them happiness or satisfaction. I'm not saying we should all quit school or anything like that. It is more important to constantly reflect on ourselves; to check if we still keep the teachings of Christ in our hearts than it is to chase for certificates and money and power and all that. For it is written,
Matthew 6:33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
If anyone watched the Bollywood movie called "Three Idiots" you might have heard a quote that goes like: "Chase excellence, and success will chase you" What Matthew 6:33 is trying to say is similar. If we keep ourselves close to God, keep His word close to our hearts, we will succeed. Of course success in this context might not mean wealth and power. But, in God's words are the key to success. Hard work, patience, courage, faithfulness etc. Which of these traits will not bring success? If we seek first the kingdom of God, all these things shall be added to us.

Keep God close. He won't fail you. Get the pun, people taking exams?

It also reminds us that love and the relationships we have with people are more important than the successes of this life. Compare the main old lady to the other old ladies; it's obvious who's the happier lot. It's even more important to us when you bring in the context of eternity..
