特备节目 + A New Song: Lose My Soul by tobyMac

Sunday, November 13, 2011

I am being lazy (or smart, haha) by combining the late A New Song post with today's 特备节目 recap. Well I have good reason for it; basically both of them boil down to a verse which I shared today earlier during 特备节目:
What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? Mark 8:36-37

For those who weren't able to come for service, today's 特备节目was a preparation of sorts for FYL - Find Your Life, the youth outreach event we'll be having this Christmas Eve from 5-8pm. The theme is about life; we often chase after earthly desires, like grades, money, love, popularity, enjoyment, etc. But after we've achieved these things ... then what? The new song I want to share with you today is a Christian hip-hop song called Lose My Soul by tobyMac:

As Christians, we should all the more be aware of the context of eternity; if we truly believe in what the Apostle's Creed has been teaching us, we know that we are sons and daughters of the eternal Kingdom of God. In a previous post, I mentioned an interview with Rick Warren (who wrote The Purpose Driven Life). Here's another excerpt:
People ask me, What is the purpose of life? And I respond: In a nutshell, life is preparation for eternity. We were not made to last forever, and God wants us to be with Him in Heaven. One day my heart is going to stop, and that will be the end of my body-- but not the end of me. I may live 60 to 100 years on earth, but I am going to spend trillions of years in eternity. This is the warm-up act - the dress rehearsal. God wants us to practice on earth what we will do forever in eternity...
When we view our lives with eternity in mind, it changes our perspectives; we should not be placing undue emphasis on earthly things which will be gone eventually, things that we will not be able to bring with us to Heaven. It's easier said than done, but we need to stand firm on our beliefs when the things of this world threatens to overwhelm us. As the new song says, we need to rely on God to overcome these worldly desires and seek His help in discerning what is right/wrong:
How do I sense the tide that's rising?
De-sensitizing me from living in light of eternity
How do I sense the tide that's rising?
It's hypnotizing me from living in light of eternity

Lord forgive us when we get consumed by the things of this world
That fight for our love, and our passion
As our eyes are open wide and on you
Grant us the privilege of your world view
And may your kingdom be, what wakes us up, and lays us down
Knowing that we have a place in heaven, we should think about the people around us; do we want to see them with us in heaven, or will it be too late for us to regret when we see them in hell? In today's 特备节目, we watched a video that gave us a stark reminder. Here's the full version:

FYL is a good opportunity for our friends to hear the gospel; will you grab the chance, or will it be too late?

However, even after we invite them, we must not forget a very important thing - prayer. Oswald Chambers once said, "Prayer does not fit us for the greater work; prayer is the greater work." Let us pray continually for our friends, for FYL the event, and for the salvation of the people who will be coming for FYL.
